Japan Government Makes It Stand Clear On Nuclear Issues
The Government of Japan has declared that their constitution provides or holding of nuclear weapons provided they are used only for the purpose of self defense and that too only in the least possible manner. However the representative of the statement who made the statement also hastened to add that the nation does not have any idea of having nuclear weapons.
This official statement has been issued to defend the government's stand and stature with regards to nuclear weapons as questioned by an independent lawmaker. This assumes significance as Japan happens to be a victim of the largest nuclear attack that mankind has ever witnessed and so there are lots of emotions involved in it.
The statement also referred to article nine of their constitution which allows the nation to hold nuclear weapons of minimum capacity as long as they are used in the interests of self defense. Nevertheless the statement laid special emphasis on "three non-nuclear principles" followed by them for a long time which prohibits the possession, production and import of nuclear arms and that they have been following it without fail.
Similarly the government representative also claimed that their statues allow the manufacture and development of self defense weapons. Again the underlying condition is that they should be used only for peace.
All these hues and cries are in wake of the recent statements issued by shoichi nakagawa the policy chief of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party and Foreign defense minister Taro Aso. While the former prompted the government to think of getting nuclear weapons due to the nuclear test conducted by South Korea the later said that it has to be materialized.
This led to fierce battle from the opposition members who demanded the immediate resignation of the foreign minister and as well as called upon the Prime minister for the second time to make the governments stand clear on this issue.
As per article 9 of the constitution which has been originally drafted by U.S. the nation is not allowed to fight a war and the defense forces of the nation is purely to be used for self defense. Despite having the infrastructure and potential to produce nuclear weapons the nation would refrain from doing so due to stiff opposition in the domestic and international fronts.
