Jury to decide on Riot on Grand Mann case

Interpretation of self defense laws has proved to be troublesome in many a times. Statutes in many nations have clearly indicated that the right to self defense does not necessarily gives the right to retaliate. The latest controversy is to be resolved by New Brunswick jury in Canada on the issue of Grand Manan Island. In this particular case a single person was beaten up severely and his house was burnt to ashes. This is regarded to a barbaric act by the prosecution while the defense attorney claims this to be an act of self defense as the victim to cause harm to others as he is alleged to have sold drugs.

The eminent jurists started examining the sentences of the witness and as well as referred various details of the case which was represented by sharp arguments from both sides. While the defense claim that they had clinching evidence to prove that he was a drug dealer the prosecution repeatedly submitted that they had overdone with their rights of self defense.

Justice Hugh McLellan of the New Brunswick Court of Queen's Bench represnted the views of the prosecution and the defense to the jury members. He also mentioned about evidences which support that gun shots were fired on the residence of the victim Ronald Ross as several members of the Bay of Fundy Island in which he was living strongly suspected him to be a dealer of illicit drugs.

The prosecutors strongly objected to this and said that he does not indulge in drug trading. They also pointed on the previous records and evidences to substantiate that he was convicted for several other offences but not for drugs. Similarly the victim himself confessed in the court of law that he had made use of cocaine but he strongly refuted the charges of the defense attorneys who claimed that he was selling them.

During that alleged incident a mob cornered the house of the victim and started to engage in vandalism after initial augments. It is also reported that the provisions of arson and weapon offences will apply to him. The victim has not suffered form major injuries.
