to walk away can be one of the hardest things for a child to do and criminals often spend a long time on winning a child’s trust before they strike.

Plan in Advance

Knowing where your children are and what they are doing with whom helps to create a safer environment for them. They should know how to contact you at all times and if they are at an age where they can handle a mobile phone, teach them how to use it. Pre-program emergency numbers into the phone and teach them to always ring you if they are running late.

Identify Top Self Defense Techniques

Enrol your child in a self-defense course for kids and teach them the best self-defense techniques. Even though children are smaller and not as strong as adults are, there is still a lot that they can do to escape from a dangerous situation.

Organize a Family Meeting on Self Defense

Get your family together and (for example with the use of a video) teach them basic self-defense. Child self defense is the key in making sure that your family members know how to defend themselves. Teaching children self defense techniques will help boost their self-esteem which will make them less hesitant in dealing with strangers. Safety tips for kids are important as well and a combination of self defense lessons and these tips will lessen the chance of your child becoming a victim.

Child self defense is sometimes taught in school as part of a teaching program. If this is not the case, then discussing this possibility with your children’s’ school could be an option. If you have the time to do it, offer to speak to children or parents and provide them your child safety tips. In agreement with the school, you could also compile a fact sheet with safety tips for kids enabling parents to discuss this further with their children.
