What is a Taser Gun?

Taser guns are stun guns that use electrical shocks to incapacitate the person they are shot at. The word Taser is actually an acronym, and stands for "Tomas A. Swift's Electric Rifle." The guns were invented by Jack Cover, and he named it after a science fiction character.

Tasers work by firing electrodes that look like darts at the person. These electrodes are attached to metal wires that stay with the gun. They are propelled in a similar way to an air rifle, using gas charges. Once the electrodes come in contact with the person or their clothing, electricity is sent into the person's body, which causes muscle and nerve function to be temporarily interrupted. While the person is incapacitated, you can either get away, or police can make an arrest. The effect is temporary, but highly effective.

Taser stun guns are kept in taser holsters, which have room for the cartridges necessary to run the guns. Taser cartridges are compressed gas that breaks open when the trigger is pulled. The gas builds pressure behind the electrodes, eventually causing them to launch. This is the same way a BB gun works. These cartridges are only used once before the electrodes must be reloaded and a new charge set. The electrodes are powered by a battery.

Who Uses Tasers

Tasers are used by the police and military across the globe. They are considered by most to be safer than traditional guns, as they do not have the capacity to kill. Mini tasers are gaining increasing popularity as a self defense option for those that are not comfortable carrying a traditional hand gun.

Different Stun Gun Models

There are several different stun gun models available. A static charge taser stun gun runs on a nine-volt battery. There are two wattage ranges, either 80,000-100,000, or 200,000 to 625,000.

A phase induction delivery is a slightly more effective type of stun gun. They are made by Talon, and deliver more of a punch than the static charge guns. Finally, the most common type of stun gun is the Electro Muscular Disruption gun. This type of gun is an air gun that shoots electrodes connected to the gun by wires. They have a range of 21 feet.
